Interactive Support Platform for "Plasztikai Sebészet" (Plastic Surgery)
Project Overview
Client: Semmelweis Publishing and Multimedia Studio
Industry: Medical Education / Academic Publishing
Platform: Custom WordPress Development with Integrated React Admin
The Challenge Semmelweis Publishing sought a digital companion for their comprehensive textbook, "Plasztikai Sebészet" (Plastic Surgery). The primary goal was to host and manage hundreds of detailed medical case studies that could not fit within the physical pages of the book. The solution needed to be secure, exclusive to book owners, and offer a seamless transition between the printed page and digital content.
The "Phygital" Experience: Seamless Navigation
The core of the project was the "Phygital" (Physical + Digital) bridge. We implemented a dual-access system to ensure users could reach the right case study in seconds:
- Mobile Access (QR Integration): Each case study in the printed book features a unique QR code. Scanning it takes the user directly to the corresponding digital case on their smartphone.
- Desktop Access (ID-based Search): For those studying on larger screens, we implemented a persistent search field. Users can simply type the case ID (e.g., I/1.11—representing Chapter/Subchapter.Case) found under the QR code to jump straight to the content.
- Presentation-Style UI: Cases are presented in a slide-like format. We utilized a vertical scroll snap mechanism with full-height sections. If content exceeds the screen height, internal scrolling is enabled, maintaining a clean, professional aesthetic similar to a high-end presentation.
Technical Architecture
To handle the complexity of hundreds of cases and thousands of unique access codes, I moved beyond standard WordPress functionality.
1. React-Powered Admin Dashboard
I developed a complex, custom-built WordPress plugin featuring an integrated React application within the admin interface. This allows for:
- High Performance: Resource-intensive tasks (like generating hundreds of QR codes) are delegated to the client-side browser, preventing server strain.
- Complex Management: A streamlined interface to generate, export, delete, and manage unique alphanumeric access codes for every printed book.
- Dynamic Control: The ability to toggle chapter visibility (making them public) for specific medical events or conferences.
2. Advanced Security & Access Control
The platform is protected by a custom authentication layer.
- Unique Book Codes: Every physical copy contains a unique code. Upon entry, the system assigns the user a custom "Book Owner" role, granting exclusive access to the library.
- Secure E-Book Distribution: Beyond the case studies, the platform provides a secure environment for downloading the digital version of the textbook, ensuring intellectual property remains protected.
3. Content Creation with Gutenberg
To give the editors full creative control without breaking the layout, we utilized the Gutenberg editor enhanced with highly customized modules. These blocks were specifically designed for medical data visualization, ensuring that case studies remain consistent, readable, and responsive.
Key Results
- Efficiency: Client-side QR generation saved significant server resources during the production phase.
- User Retention: The ID-based navigation provided a friction-less experience for students and professionals using the book in a desktop environment.
- Scalability: The React-WP API architecture allows the system to handle future volumes of the textbook with minimal overhead.
